5. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Universal PicturesScott Pilgrim vs. the World is a film produced and directed by Edgar Wright, based on the "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. This film follows the story of its awkward titular character, Scott, who must fight the seven evil exes of his love interest, Ramona, in order to be with her. This film is fun and true to its source material, and has been lauded by fans and critics alike. Unfortunately, it was unable to make its mark at the box office, and could not to recoup its production expenses. The thing that makes Scott Pilgrim vs the World so enjoyable, aside from its great cast and sharp writing, is its integration of animation into a live-action setting. Being based on a graphic novel, and being deeply rooted in video games, Wright uses animation to bridge the gap between media and make the film truly look like a hybrid between film, comics, and video games. For example, health bars and batman-esque exclamation captions appear during fights, and tiny lightning bolts jump off of the instruments in the film's many musical scenes. Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a joy to watch, if not for its quirky source material, then for its visual spectacle.
