9. The Chamber

LET ME MAKE YOU A MARTYR
Chamber Films

Imagine the scene if you will...you're in a cramped, Cold War submarine barely capable of supporting two passengers let alone the four it currently does. There's been an accident. You're stranded on the bottom of hostile waters. There's a leak. Oh, and one of your crewmates might just be a little bit on the psychotic side. Comfortable? We didn't think so.

Preying on our base fear of claustrophobia The Chamber is an intense viewing experience. Simple in premise, yet executed with skill and style this is a film that really should run out of air around the halfway point. That it doesn't is down to a cast delivering performances with scarily engaging conviction and a director who really knows how to follow the less-is-more approach.

True, there are only so many things that can happen in a mini-sub, but even though there is undoubtedly some familiarity, everything is done to a high enough standard that it becomes less and less important as the film progresses.

Once you adjust to the surroundings, The Chamber could easily have become that rather dull, repetitive viewing experience, and it does threaten to drift slightly in the middle act. But through clever plotting it manages to maintain course to become a genuinely uncomfortable experience.
