8. Trash Fire

LET ME MAKE YOU A MARTYR
Orion Pictures

How to describe Trash Fire? Adrian Grenier plays an arse. His attractive, unbelievably forgiving girlfriend is heading for the relationship exit door so in order to prove his love he must reconnect with his estranged sister and grandmother. Only problem: his sister won't leave the house after being terribly disfigured following a fire he started and his grandmother, well, she's murderously bonkers.

Doesn't sound too much like a comedy but that's exactly what Trash Fire is, albeit one with humour so black as to make a goth look positively radiant. Much of this humour comes from Grenier's character's refusal to apply a filter, simply saying whatever he thinks at any given moment to anyone he chooses, with wonderfully uncomfortable results, especially when dealing with his Bible belt brother-in-law.

Don't be fooled though - Trash Fire packs a horrific punch. Despite the witty put-downs and seemingly unending moments of "oh no, he didn't say that, did he?" there is a sense of foreboding, a feeling that this is all going to end so badly. The only question remains: badly for whom? Just make sure your relationship is on solid ground before you suggest a viewing for date night - this film might just inspire you to say what you really think about the in-laws.
