9. Brothers (Connie Nielsen)

Susanne Bier's searing psychological thriller was eventually adapted into a more well-known (and surprisingly decent) 2009 Hollywood movie of the same name starring Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal, though the original has a more patient, stripped-down quality to it that makes it feel a little less melodramatic and a tad more real.

Connie Nielsen is just one part of the fantastic trifecta of actors comprising the movie's pressing moral dilemma, but as a powerful statement on the emotional destruction war causes, and one that avoids the usual staid "war is hell" cliches, it's a movie not easily shaken.

If you want big acting with famous faces, the remake might serve you better, but if you're craving a more restrained realisation of the same story, stick with the 2004 original.
