Films about time travel often end up being utterly fun romps that explore the Sci-Fi concept in exciting ways, but Safety Not Guaranteed takes it in an entirely different direction.

This film tells the story of a collection of magazine employees who take on a job to go interview and investigate a man by the name of Kenneth, who has placed an advert requesting a companion to travel through time with him.

The film mostly revolves around the characters interactions with each other, as Darius - played by Aubrey Plaza - develops feelings for the supposed time-traveller and Jeff (the man technically in charge) seeks to reconnect with a former fling who lives nearby.

The premise is absurd, but takes this methodical approach to the comedy of the situation, making it feel funny but also really heart-warming. There are some emotional moments shared between the characters that give them a sense of depth and nuance.

At the heart of this is a brilliant appearance from Plaza, who delivers a reserved and truthful performance. She is utterly engaging to watch as she connects with Kenneth and quickly becomes the heart of the film.
