1. The Terminator

Though the franchise's reputation has been tarnished with several terrible sequels, James Cameron's work on The Terminator (and its sequel) is still undeniably brilliant, with the 1984 original rightfully holding onto its place as a Hollywood classic, despite the messy state of the series today.

You all know how this one goes: Arnie is the unstoppable killing machine from the future, and his target is Sarah Connor, who must die in order to stop her unborn child becoming a key member of the anti-machine movement. It's a simple plot that's been spiced up with a peppering of time travel, shootouts, body horror and intense chase scenes, all held together by Cameron's steady directorial hand, and a lean, muscular script with absolutely zero fat on its bones.

Indeed, The Terminator is relentless from start to end, and wastes not a single second of screentime. With a complex subject like time travel, things could easily have spiralled out of control (a problem the sequels succumbed to) but Cameron doesn't get bogged down in timey-wimey nonsense, and instead keeps his movie tense, focused and exciting. The Terminator is essential viewing.
