7. Four Weddings And A Funeral

Rocky Sylvester Stallone
Universal Pictures

If you're at all familiar with the collaborations between screenwriter Richard Curtis and star Hugh Grant (Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones), then you'll know exactly what you're in for with Four Weddings And A Funeral, their first effort together: a sappy love story mixed up with some typically awkward Hugh Grant comedy, and a feelgood slice of quirky British-ness.

The movie follows Charles (Grant) through the five events listed in the title, exploring his run-ins with romance along the way. Being the first of many Curtis/Grant rom-coms, Four Weddings does feel a little bit generic when rewatched today, but it's such a charming movie that washes over you like a rainbow unicorn made of chocolate, that this is an easy fault to forgive.

Grant is excellent here too, from his endearing speech at Angus and Laura's wedding to his inevitable confession of his love for Carrie. It's impossible to not feel uplifted when it's over, and with those bitterly cold winter days approaching, this one's the perfect weapon to combat them with.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
