8. All Dogs Go To Heaven

Rocky Sylvester Stallone
United Artists

Though it was buried by The Little Mermaid at the box-office, All Dogs Go To Heaven has since garnered a strong cult following. It's definitely not up to that Disney standard, but Don Bluth's follow-up to The Land Before Time is still an admirable piece of animation due to its bravery in depicting some very dark subject matter.

Indeed, if you grew up in the '90s, All Dogs Go To Heaven probably traumatized you at least once or twice. Early on, protagonist Charlie is hit with a car and killed. There's also a kidnapped orphan, a nightmare set in hell, and dogs generally being mistreated and harmed throughout. It's surprisingly serious stuff, but this only makes it more engaging to watch, since the characters are challenged in genuinely trying ways.

Its rough visual style also gives the movie a lovingly handcrafted feel, an effect that feels magical when compared to today's era of glossy, computer-generated animated flicks. It's a scrappy little animation with dark themes and a coat of gleeful childlike whimsy, and it's definitely worth checking out if you're up for a Disney-esque animated musical, with a bit more of an edge.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
