6. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Singin' In The Rain is a standout amongst Hollywood's musicals, if only for one reason - it was all original. The majority are based of Broadway plays or similar things, but this was written specifically for film. In fact, it got a Broadway play adapted
from it! The story features a group of actors from the silent film era having to adapt to the advent of 'talkies'. They must learn to speak properly, and when their studio puts into motion a musical film, they all must learn to sing. Unfortunately for the lead actress, she can't get the hang of it, so they bring in a different girl to dub her parts, who then falls in love with the lead actor (played by Gene Kelly). Despite only moderate success at the time of its release, it's slowly been garnering more acclaim as time goes on, and nowadays it's impossible to find a "Best Musicals" list that doesn't feature this film. Strangely enough, even though the film was original, the song "Singin' In the Rain" has been around since 1927. Mind. Blown.
