7. Chicago (2002)
Set in 1924, Chicago tells the story of two women, one who is the star of a vaudeville show in a nightclub, and the woman who desperately wants the other's job. Eventually they both wind up on death row, and are caught up in a media circus that may be their ticket out of the gallows. The film got critical praise on release, mostly focusing on the clever satire of celebrity life and scandal, but also got considerable praise for its cast and how well they performed the musical numbers (Catherine Zeta-Jones in particular). All told, the film won six Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and was nominated for seven more, equaling out to a staggering 13 nominations in total. One critic named Tim Robey named it the best film musical in 30 years, and thanked it for helping us to "welcome back the movie musical as a form."
