1. His House
This feature debut from director Remi Weekes was originally inspired by the story of a real house in rural Essex. The house sat empty for years after the owner moved out, claiming she couldn’t rent it or sell it because it was ‘spiritually contaminated’ by the years of accused witches being held there before execution. It’s lovely period property within commuting distance of London, with the added features of unexplained screams, rattling doors and spontaneously appearing pools of blood!
The house was completely undesirable: which led story co-writer Felicity Evans to consider what would happen if so called ‘undesirable’ people were lumped into the house. Inspired by the squalid conditions of many refugee houses in the UK, His House follows a refugee couple from South Sudan try to adjust to living in this unliveable home.
It’s a fresh and socially conscious concept is bought to life by stunning performances from Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu - with a bit of Matt Smith thrown in there if you’re looking for a friendly face.
