As overdone as it may seem, a creepy old lady with clouded over eyes and a weird psychic air is always going to guarantee a few spooks.

The lady in question this time is Edna: an elderly woman riddled with dementia. When she goes missing, her daughter and granddaughter travel to her secluded forest home to search for her. After reappearing one morning looking like she’s been dragged through the marshlands, but apparently completely unaware she was ever missing, Edna’s mental state continues to deteriorate while strange black mould spreads through her house.

The film has a disarming tender edge to it- from the post-it notes stuck around the house to the very human horror of age infantilising you and a family being forced to watch a loved one literally decay in front of their eyes. It’s not necessarily the kind of Halloween gore-fest that may appeal to some, but more a slow-burning psychological horror that cashes in on the dread of losing a parent.
