Finally a bit of space-based horror!
This Russian science-fiction flick sees the only surviving cosmonaut, Konstantin, return from a mission unknowingly carrying his very own alien companion. The difficulty is that the alien isn’t only a parasite, but actually a bit of a helping hand. Living in the cosmonaut’s throat, the creature benefits from the nutrients Konstantin consumes and is in return making his injuries heal faster.
However, the monster is definitely not innocent- and as the film goes on Konstantin and his psychologist Tatyana have to navigate the secrecy of the organisation controlling them, and the horrors their alien companion is capable of.
The Cold War setting, and muted colour palette make this film as aesthetically pleasing as it is unnerving - and if you’re after an alien horror that’s more understated than it is immediately terrifying, then this one is a good watch.
