10 Best Nostalgic Mixtape Movie Soundtracks

7. The Big Chill

OK, so this one is a little bit of a cheat on the rule of only focusing on retro soundtracks as used to establish the period of the movie's setting. Lawrence Kasdan's friends reunited movie is set contemporary to its 1983 production, but its soundtrack is firmly rooted in the 60s, the era 15 years earlier when the movie's middle aged suburban yuppies were idealistic youths with the world at their feet.

It's a soundtrack mixtape that is evocative of a particular moment in time for the movie, then, just not the specific moment in which the movie is set. And, while the Best Picture nominee's set of 80s mid-life crises may not have aged brilliantly, the 60s soundtrack remains masterful.

Basically a set of Motown's greatest hits, the movie hits us with everything from Marvin Gaye to Aretha Franklin, and The Four Tops to The Temptations.

Certainly plenty of audiences got the same nostalgic feeling for their youth as the characters did, or maybe just appreciated the well selected track list, as The Big Chill, marketed as "the music of a generation", became one of the highest selling movie soundtracks ever, shifting over six million copies in the US alone.
