Like American Graffiti, Dazed And Confused is another one-day-on-the-threshold-between-adolescence-and-adulthood slice of teen nostalgia filled with hanging out and driving around with the radio on. Only this time, it isn't looking back from the 70s but rather looking back at it, meaning that it isn't soundtracked by sweet rock 'n' roll but by hard and heavy, big haired butt-rock.
But then what would you expect from a movie named for a Led Zeppelin song, with a lead character called "Pink" Floyd and a director who would go on to form a School Of Rock?
Like Lucas before him, director Richard Linklater drew on the classics that soundtracked his own youth essentially to curate his own dream 70s rock radio station. He couldn't get the rights to Zeppelin themselves, but still fills the drinking and druggy haze with the likes of Aerosmith, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
The themes (and music) were picked up years later by Linklater's 1980-set "spiritual sequel" Everybody Wants Some!! (named after a Van Halen song), which stepped forward in time with a bit of Blondie and Devo.
