Although the producers originally toyed with the idea of giving this 1986-made, 1959-set Stephen King coming-of-age story an original Michael Jackson soundtrack (which would have been wildly out of place), it's hard now to imagine Stand By Me as something separate from its soundtrack of classic 50s "oldies".

Hell, it's even right there in the adaptation's title (screenwriter Raynold Gideon said that King's original title The Body "sounded like either a sex film or a bodybuilding one", so had to be changed), which borrows the name of Ben E. King's spiritually infused 1960 soul standard, a song that plays over the end credits.

Rob Reiner had made his directorial debut a couple of years earlier with another classic soundtrack, This Is Spinal Tap, but the tone here was a whole lot sweeter. The Stand By Me soundtrack's mix of rock 'n' roll, classic soul, and doo-wop is a perfect marker for a simpler, more innocent time in the lives of its young characters, many of whom find later life a lot harsher.

The film's release sparked a new wave of interest in the title song and, as King (Stephen)'s film rode high at the theatrical box office, King (Ben E.)'s song re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 twenty-five years after it first charted, peaking at number 9.
