10 Best Original Movie Characters Of 2013

A failed folk singer with a cat; a charming operating system; a Japanese chick who fights giant monsters - these are just some of the characters we fell in love with over the course of 2013.

Great new characters are in short supply. Or so it seems, from the overwhelming amount of remakes, reboots, and sequels flooding the movie industry today. 2013 was a rough year for original films - amongst the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, only one of them (Gravity) was a purely original film, not based on any pre-established franchise or source material. The original character market has rarely been stretched so thin. But that is not to say last year was a total wash out. Despite a great majority of memorable characters springing from established works - 12 Years a Slave, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Fruitvale Station spring to mind - there was a healthy crop of iconic new characters, created through good screenwriting, good acting, and quite often both. So let us first reminisce on those movie characters from 2013 that really left a lasting impression. Some of these characters are incredibly likeable, others detestable, but all will occupy our thoughts going into post-Oscar season 2014! If there is a character you think didn't deserve to make this list, or one that should have, feel free to drop your opinions in the comments section below...
