10 Best Original Movie Characters Of 2013

8. Agent C.M. Kruger - Elysium

When Krueger enters the world of Elysium, it is just as another henchman shooting down a shuttle full of immigrants. There is no hint to what we had waiting in store from this character. Sharlto Copley impressed the world with his debut acting role in District 9, but in Elysium he is unrecognisable as the psychopathic Kruger. Elysium's main plot is relatively formulaic - Matt Damon must get to Elysium to heal himself. Although there are tons of complications along the way, that's essentially it. Kruger's presence in the film is to function as a wild card - his frequently changing motivations and unpredictable behavior give the second half of the film a terrifying sense of urgency. Additionally, he functions as an ethical reference for Jodi Foster's Delacort - a monster she created through necessity, but unlike her has no illusions of morality. The most effective moment of this character's screen time is when he is threatening Frey (Alice Braga) - he turns to her daughter Matilda and tells her, "close your eyes. I don't like violence in front of kids." Villainy this honest is always chilling.
