10 Best Performances In Western Movies

9. Hugh Jackman As Wolverine - Logan (2017)

It's no secret that Logan wasn't made in the sixties by an Italian director and there's no Stetson in sight, but Hugh Jackman's final outing as the iconic X-Man was littered with dusty outcroppings and southern architecture as Wolverine's swansong took place in El Paso, Texas, straddling the Mexican border.

Hugh Jackman is no stranger to Oscar-quality acting (you need only watch the superb Prisoners for proof), yet injecting such emotional weight and character depth into a film about a popular superhero was perhaps his highest achievement.

Jackman's performance wonderfully fused the character we know from the plentiful X-Men films with the western genre by taking centre stage in a film about a dejected man who's best years are so clearly behind him. Logan is such a tonal deviation from the series, yet we're constantly aware that this is still a Wolverine journey, and Jackman's consistency of character but understanding of the film's desired tone speaks volumes about his acting range.

Despite featuring one of the most beloved comic characters of the century, it feels wrong to disregard Logan as just another superhero movie.
