10 Best Picture Winners Everyone Is Far Too Harsh On
8. The Last Emperor
The Best Picture winner of the 60th Academy Awards, The Last Emperor won all nine awards it was nominated for and was a huge Oscar success, but it hasn't lasted well in memory.
This is understandable to some extent: with its numbing length and slow pace, the fact that it picked up nine Oscars was definitely a little excessive. Nonetheless, The Last Emperor is still a worthwhile movie with plenty to like; it's a sobering and visually stunning historical epic that is genuinely powerful and boasts plenty of fine performances.
It wasn't the best line-up that year anyway, and the Oscars going to such an Oscar-friendly film when the competition is weak is perfectly understandable.
It's not a maligned winner; rather, it's a forgotten one that no-one ever talks about. This feels unfortunate given how solid the film actually is despite being a major example of Oscar-Bait. It isn't a great film, but it's a lot more bearable than many other Best Picture winners.
