10 Best Picture Winners Everyone Is Far Too Harsh On
7. Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump winning Best Picture at the 67th Academy Awards is generally seen as one of the biggest Oscar injustices of them all. It beat what are probably the two most beloved movies of the 90s - Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption - which led to a general hatred of the film because of that.
Frankly, it's a bit ridiculous to hate a good film, backed by heart, strong visuals and a great lead performance, just because it was chosen over something else.
The Shawshank Redemption might be one of the greatest films ever made but back then, it hadn't turned into the classic it's considered now. It was a box office bomb and everyone ignored it. The fact that it managed to get multiple Oscar nominations at all is satisfying enough.
As for Pulp Fiction, such an unconventional film was lucky to get the Oscar love that it did. As well as this, maybe the Academy aren't as dumb as we always claim and realized that Pulp Fiction isn't as good as die-hard fans claim it is. Maybe they realized that Forrest Gump is warm, genuine and technically accomplished while Tarantino's sophomore effort, though influential, is also bloated, soulless and nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is.
Forrest Gump is a bit over-sentimental and has some problematic messages, but overall it's a solid Best Picture winner. Just because it beat out two well-loved films, that doesn't make it a terrible movie.
