10 Best Psychological Thrillers Of All Time

5. Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive

Hailed as one of the greatest films of the 21st century and helmed by one of the most acclaimed and unique filmmakers in living memory, David Lynch’s Oscar-nominated Mulholland Drive is just as strangely surreal and hypnotically fascinating as you’d expect of something to come from the mind that gave us Twin Peaks and Eraserhead.

Set in a dreamlike vision of Hollywood, the plot of the film sees budding young actor Betty (Naomi Watts) join forces with amnesiac Rita (Laura Harring) to uncover her true identity after she escapes a car crash on the titular, winding road.

Being a David Lynch film, though, nothing about the relatively simply premise is straight forward. As the pair begin to follow the trail of clues of what happened on the fateful night of the car crash, subplots involving a clumsy assassin, a director confronted by a mysterious cowboy, and a strange man who resides behind a diner.

If you’re going into this film expecting logical explanations, you’ll be severely disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a mysterious psychological thriller that can get into your head and under your skin, then Mulholland Drive is the film for you.
