Two-time Oscar-nominated director David Fincher has proven himself to be one of the masters of the psychological thrillers with heavy-hitters including Fight Girl, Zodiac, and Gone Girl. However, even those films don’t come close to the suffocating tension and dread contained within 1995 gritty crime thriller Seven, his second feature film.

Starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as detectives on the case to find a serial killer known only as John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who gruesomely murders his victims in a punishment representative of one of the seven deadly sins they’re believed to have transgressed, Seven is a grimy, bleak, and frequently unsettling outing that takes viewers deep into the underbelly of the unnamed city these murders takes place.

A tense game of cat-and-mouse between detectives and killer, alongside having you asking yourself “what’s in the box?” over and over again, Seven will also have you asking what kind of person could commit such actions and why. But these answers are purposefully and gleefully hidden from us by the nihilistic killer for their own twisted reasons that all comes to a boiling point in a nail-biting finale.
