6. The Old Ways
Cristina, the lead character of Christopher Alender’s 2020 film The Old Ways, did not have a great childhood.
She witnessed her mother undergo a painful exorcism when she was just a young girl and then, to make matters worse, the demon attacked her after it left its host! Talk about bad luck.
As an adult (played by Brigitte Kali Canales), Cristina is the subject of her own demon-removal ritual, when she is captured and chained up by two shamans. She is initially sceptical that there is an evil spirit inside of her, but after a series of disturbing events, she gets the memo.
The Old Ways is not only about getting rid of a demon, but it’s about the way in which this is done. The titular “old ways” are the centrepiece of the story, which ties into the Mexican location and the history of the bruja, a traditional group of sorcerers.
A surprisingly deep movie with a fantastic setting and plenty of gory moments, if you think you know everything there is to know about demon movies, then this will make you think again.
