7. She Will

In the Earth
Vertigo Releasing

Directed by multimedia artist Charlotte Colbert and with Italian horror legend Dario Argento serving as one of the producers, She Will was always going to be interesting.

In this 2021 piece, former actress Veronica (Alice Krige) gets more than she bargains for when she goes on a health retreat. She discovers that the lodge she is staying in is built on an old witch-burning site and, through the ashes of the executed women, she has the power to use her dreams to punish abusive men.

Veronica was embroiled in a sordid relationship with an older male director when she was young, which serves as the main wrongdoing she is out to avenge. The decision to draw comparisons between the historical punishment of women and more modern misogyny is genius, and the idea of women being more connected to the Earth plays a huge part in the plot.

She Will is a feminist horror for the ages, but it also draws on the power of the land and how it holds trauma for a long time.

Check out some great performances from Rupert Everett and Malcolm McDowell too.
