Anyone who is still suffering from PTSD regarding Rue’s death from The Hunger Games, look away now, as the actor who plays her (Amandla Stenberg) is in this film.

She plays Jonny, a figure skater in Jacqueline Castel’s 2023 film My Animal. Jonny is the love interest of Heather (Bobbi Salvör Menuez), a young woman who is secretly a werewolf. Heather has had to keep her true self a secret for her whole life, away from the prying eyes of her controlling parents, but once she meets Jonny, she realises that there is nothing wrong with being who she is.

The queer-coding is not subtle in this movie, but subtlety isn't always a good thing. It’s refreshing to see two female characters (Menuez is non-binary, but the character of Heather is a woman) in a romantic relationship on-screen, especially in a horror context.

My Animal doesn’t nail its themes - it’s actually a bit sloppy in places - but it’s got its heart in the right place. Also, who doesn’t love a good werewolf movie? Feels like Twilight really killed that genre off for a while.
