7. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Shutter 2004
Columbia

Just when we thought that Wes Craven had reached his sell-by date and the slasher genre was as dead as Freddy, along came Scream to change everything. Suddenly, the scene was awash with copycats as studios cashed in on the new wave. Enter Jennifer Love-Hewitt, a new Final Girl for a new era.

When JLH and her crew accidentally run someone down after a boozy July 4th celebration, they decide to throw the body off a pier and pretend like it never happened. One year later and they begin to receive ominous letters: "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER... "

The fisherman killer who survives is in fact avenging the death of his daughter, killed in a separate car crash the previous year. He knows the man responsible, David Egan, will be at that exact spot where his daughter died and kills David, making it look like suicide, only to be coincidentally run over moments later.

So how is this a reverse horror film? The four protagonists have already covered up one potentially fatal accident, leading to more deaths, making them the real instigators of this one man killing spree, innocent or not. In the film's climax, the Fisherman Killer has his arm ripped off and is thrown into the sea (manslaughter number two), leading JLH to lie to the cops AGAIN.

What is with these brats? Why are we rooting for them? They're guilty of multiple felonies, which in turn leads to a sequel and yep, MORE MURDERS.
