10 Best REVERSE Horror Movies

6. Pitch Black (2000)

Shutter 2004
USA Films

If Pitch Black had been released (with a bit of redesign) as a sequel in the Alien franchise, it would've been better than most of those sequels and spin offs combined. David Twohy's millennial sci-fi horror sleeper hit represents the very best in how to make a project work with minimal finance - it's all in the script, not in post production.

When a transport ship is struck by space debris, the damage wakes the crew from cryo-sleep and forces an emergency landing on a remote planet, somewhere in the vast reaches of bloody nowhere. The trashed ship, however, is now the least of their worries. The planet will soon be eclipsed, losing all sunlight, and there's an indigenous species of nocturnal creatures out for blood. If that isn't enough, one of the passengers, Richard B Riddick, is a psychopath and convicted murderer. Put simply, they're completely f*cked.

That Riddick's virtue is up for grabs practically right up to the climax is genius, casting doubts on who the survivors should really be siding with. Johns, the mercenary and secret morphine addict, suggests using human bait, making him the REAL villain here right under the audience's noses.

Riddick, it seems, it not without a conscience, returning to save the stranded and besieged survivors, making him ultimately the hero of the film. It's a shame the sequels lost this very effective simplicity.
