Shutter 2004
GMM/Phenomena

Shutter is a low-key sleeper hit from Thailand rode the wave of outstanding Asian horror at the turn of the last century and despite the relatively generic design of the antagonist, has a particularly effective trick up its sleeve.

Late one night, driving home from a college reunion, couple Tun and Jane hit a person on the road. In a state of panic, Tun persuades Jane to keep driving and much like the teens of I Know What You Did Last Summer, they leave the scene of the crime. There are, however, no reports of a fatality; could the presence of a spirit be a result of a terrible event in Tun's past?

With its escalating sightings of this ghostly apparition, Shutter could have easily coasted by riffing on the Ju-On playbook, but it has a surprising reverse-horror tune to whistle. It turns out Tun and his college pals are responsible for the rape and blackmail of Natre, a former girlfriend and utterly devoted loner, who commits suicide after Tun documents the attack with his camera.

As those responsible die one by one, it's clear that their fates are well-deserved. The wall crawling nightmare Natre, replete with requisite masses of sopping pitch black hair, deserves her vengeance. The main protagonists are actually the villains here and the terrifying Natre a victim.

The final twist is too good to reveal here, just bear in mind that if your shoulders begin to ache, there could be more than stress to blame...
