10 Best Ryan Reynolds Performances
6. Gary/Gavin/Gabriel - The Nines (2007)
Playing more than more role in a film can often work wonders for an actor. Look no further than Tom Hardy's dual performance in Legend (2015) or Nic Cage's work in Adaptation (2002). For the 2007 psychological thriller The Nines, Ryan Reynolds took things a step further a played the all of film's three main protagonists.
The Nines follows three different men, who must get to the bottom of a series of bizarre happenings in their lives. There's Gary, an actor under house arrest; Gavin, a TV writer who's trying to get his show off the ground; and Gabriel, a video game designer who finds himself trapped with his family after their car breaks down.
It's a very strange and confusing sci-fi flick, with a lot to say about life and the universe, and the whole thing is held together by Reynolds' fantastic triage of performances. None of the characters feel totally alike, each fully-formed in the short time we see them and each allowing Reynolds to show off every aspect of his talent as the film goes on. This was one of Reynold's first forays into more dramatic territory, and though it's a risky move it ends up working wonders.
