David Cronenberg's Scanners is one of "those" movies. One solitary viewing of the now iconic opening trailer is enough to wet the appetite of those looking for a truly 80's-style mind-boggling thrill ride of excitement and insanity, sprinkled in a dose of flamboyance.

The premise sees scientists utilising new technology and psychics to develop new weaponry and security systems. These psychics are known as "Scanners"; those who possess unusually strong telekinetic powers. However, a rogue scanner, Darryl Revok (Ironside) has put together his own special task force and is using them for his own power play.

Audiences are left on tenterhooks of anticipation and anxiety once any form of tension arises. The infamous soundtrack and theme of the movie offers a genuinely gut-wrenching, provoking, dreaded sound piece that alerts viewers to pending peril. Altercations take on new meaning knowing that at any moment the ante can be raised by aspects outside of conventional tech such as guns and ammo.

Ironside offers a quintessential crazed villain intent on wreaking havoc, who has the intelligence to buoy his terror-laden plan. Scenes of escalating tension and angst see this movie serve up genuinely terrifying moments and heart-pounding dread as audiences are left to wonder who or what will be affected next.

The well-renowned aesthetic of the 80's ensure there is a dose of fun and vintage aspects scattered all over the movie. Viewers can rest easy knowing that whilst impressive, many of the special effects and moments of fright may be tame by today's standards, but this allows for audiences to immerse themselves fully into the narrative. It's a cultural classic.
