10 Best Scary Movies For People Who Hate Horror

4. The Thing (1982)

30 Days Of Night
Universal

Critics initially called this one of the worst films of all time upon release. Still not enough to peak your interest? Right, let's see if we can rectify that.

The Thing has evolved into a talking point among fans as one of "those" movies no one will ever agree on. Its cult status is essentially the stuff of legend at this stage, and with good reason.

Initially the most prominent "horror" on this list, The Thing is layered with much more wealth to its narrative. Beyond the outer layer of the movie lies a deep-rooted examination of the human psyche, and how we might react to each other and to outside threats in times of crisis.

Centred around a creature able to morph into the form of the things it consumes, the film toys with the viewer as fear and doubt rule the mindset of the audience. Its ability to combine innovative horror with a true sense of doubt and paranoia means the audience never fully know who or what to believe.

As the film develops and circumstances become more tenuous, a masterful performance from Russell constantly keeps the audience on tenterhooks as they feel as helpless as the 12 men stranded in such an isolated location. The sense of vulnerability plays torturous games with the viewer, with twists, turns and genuinely striking deaths resulting in a pulsating climax which in itself, offers few comforting outcomes.
