Back To The Future is one of those films that’s on TV all the time, but you never get sick of watching it. Most people could tell you the plot with a good degree of accuracy. It has burrowed its way into the collective consciousness, but it’s no less beloved for its ubiquity.

We all know the story: teenage layabout gets sent back in time, stops his parents from meeting, almost engages in a problematic relationship with his own mother, and must repair the damage to ensure he doesn’t erase himself from history.

The characters are memorable and lovingly drawn; the performances are all superb, from endlessly charismatic Michael J Fox to wild Christopher Lloyd to Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover (in his one non-weird film role) as Marty’s parents. The setpieces are beyond iconic, and the timeline-related plotholes only add to the fun.

Most of all, it’s one of the best written family films ever made, with pacing to die for and no end of quotable lines. It was an instant classic at the time, and remains ageless - a genuine masterpiece.
