10 Best Sci-Fi Comedy Movies You Need To Watch
2. Young Frankenstein
The endlessly talented Mel Brooks is one of the few directors who can stake a claim to having a classic in every genre, and in the same year he released Blazing Saddles - the greatest comedy western - he treated us to Young Frankenstein, a pitch perfect spoof and an endlessly rewatchable film.
As a rule, any film with Gene Wilder is going to be at least pretty good, and he’s close to career best here as the eponymous doctor. Wilder has an incredible knack for being relatable and bonkers at the same time, and this is a full throated, kinetic performance for the ages.
The film takes the Mary Shelley story as inspiration, then goes nuts with it. Peter Boyle is terrific as the monster, and Brooks staples Kenneth Mars and Madeline Kahn are great fun, too.
Mel Brooks’ classic movies take the form of variety shows: you get a story, some laughs, a few song and dance numbers, and the audience is always sent home happy. There can be few more delightfully inventive and creative films as this: a team at the peak of its powers, throwing everything at the wall and having most of it stick.
