10 Best Sci-Fi Film Comedies Of All Time

3. Young Frankenstein

Gene Wilder Young Frankenstein
20th Century Fox

A second entry for Mel Brooks on this list, in this 1974 Black and White entry that managed to both parody and pay homage to the Mary Shelley classic. Young Frankenstein manages to rival Brooks' previous entry in terms of comedy, the country western spoof Blazing Saddles, while surpassing it as an overall product.

Gene Wilder stars as the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who struggles so much with living in his shadow that he attempts to change his name. He soon finds himself repeating the mistakes of his Grandfather, although events don't go quite so murderous thanks to the Monster's love of a good song and dance routine.

Peter Boyle of Everybody Loves Raymond fame is amazing as the Monster, who is able to be subdued by the sounds of a violin! While there is much fun at the idea of a more 'nuanced' Monster, it's Boyle's ability to still have us feeling for the Monster that makes his performance so strong.

There is also a spirit of the 'Carry On' series present throughout the film, with Brooks is very much poking fun at the blatant sexualisation of female characters here rather than exploiting it. Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr ham it up with Wilder in these scenes, the slapstick moments delivered with a knowing wink to the camera.

With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
