10 Best Sci-Fi Film Comedies Of All Time
4. Ghostbusters
This Ivan Reitman directed 1984 film was hyped up as one of the big blockbuster films of the decade. While the swarms of ghosts and monster sized marshmallow men definitely lived up to the hype, the real treat of this movie was how god damn funny it was. The key to its success is in its character dynamic, a perfect formula that was bizarrely ignored by the woeful 2016 abomination of a reboot.
Bill Murray brings his laid back biting humorous style to the fore as Peter Venkman, a chronic womaniser who is always making fun of his colleagues. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wisely play it straight and low energy as dorky scientists Ray and Egon, allowing for Murray's comic talents to shine.
This is exemplified by Murray's iconic "this man has no dick" line, which only works thanks to Aykroyd's willingness to forego a cheap laugh in the delivery of his speech leading into this. Rick Moranis brings a more slapstick style of humour more suited for a family friendly fare as super dorky accountant Louis, which works nicely off Sigourney Weaver's grounded portrayal as the haunted, then possessed, Dana Barrett.
While the ghosts deliver some decent scares for kids, they are played for laughs for the adults, from a cigar smoking cabbie to the iconic food consuming machine Slimer. The climactic scene in which Ray accidentally summons a monstrous Marshmallow Man is an absolute delight, Reitman managing to bring the delightfully absurd idea to life in epic scale.
