10 Best Sci-Fi Movie Villains

9. General Thade

The Matrix Agent Smith
20th Century Fox

An absolute stand-out in an otherwise completely unspectacular film, General Thade may raise a few eyebrows for appearing on this list. But the weaknesses of the dire Planet of the Apes remake do not fall on the shoulders of the brilliant General Thade, played with aplomb by the ever-charismatic Tim Roth.

In a film of so little substance, Thade stands out as a deeply interesting character. It is clear throughout that Roth is having fun with the role and it shines though in a fantastic performance that is just the right side of too much.

Thade is a dictatorial ruler who will stop at nothing to keep his control and power. He is cruel and merciless in his actions, but capable of hiding his true evil nature enough to remain respected amongst his 'people'.

The remake was sadly lack-lustre and this is even more glaringly obvious with a character, and performance, within it as good as General Thade. A genuinely brilliant villain that deserved so much better than the film they surrounded him with.
