The world let out a collective sigh when it was announced Blade Runner - without question the greatest slice of sci-fi cinema ever put to celluloid - would be getting a sequel. And yet, here we are, years later, and Blade Runner 2049 somehow managed to pull off the impossible. Not only was it great, it did nothing to tarnish the legacy of the original classic. How many sequels can say that?

Set decades after the events of the first film, this belated follow-up hones in on one Officer K, played stoically by Ryan Gosling, as he attempts to find the whereabouts of Harrison Ford's enigmatic Blade Runner gone off-the-grid. Soon he is faced with solving a mystery that could change this dark vision of the future forever.

Helmed by French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 is another bold and hypnotic masterpiece, a sci-fi film that pushes the boundaries, asks real questions about what it means to be a human, and dazzles with explosive moments of mind-blowing action. It's everything you could have asked for.

Everyone involved in this film delivers their best work: not only is Ford, back in the saddle as Deckard, the best he's been for ages, but cinematographer Roger Deakins produces his finest work to date: hallucinatory, otherworldly, beautiful. What's more, the film bypasses any need to address the age old "Is Deckard a replicant?" question by simply refusing to engage with it. What a brilliantly simple tactic!
