10 Best Sci-Fi Movies Of 2017

2. Logan

blade runner 2049
Fox

Hugh Jackman has always been great in what is arguably his most famous role to date, but it took 17 years - and eight performances - for the actor to deliver his best and most definitive turn as the infamous mutant.

Loosely based on the "Old Man Logan" run of X-Men comics, Logan sees Jackman's anti-hero living out a sad life as a limo driver in a dark vision of the future. Wolverine is on death's door for the sum of the film, and Jackman delivers a magnetic, husky performance as a dying superhero trying to find meaning in what seem to be his final days. It's a violent road movie, too, as Logan battles his way through dust, dirt, and blood, with Professor X and a strange young girl in tow.

The film is great blend of western and dystopian sci-fi picture, as Wolverine trawls the plains of a broken frontier just like the best movie cowboys. In a clever move, most of the sci-fi aspects in Logan are subtly placed, often in the background... we encounter automated farming robot, driverless trucks, a villain with a robot arm. None of the elements are overplayed, which gives the film an unexpected realism. You can imagine the world really being this way in 2029!

As a result, James Mangold has given us his best film to date, mixing elements of Mad Max, Shane and even Little Miss Sunshine to create a modern classic. Not to forget the talented supporting cast - which includes Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, and newcomer Dafne Keen - who lend the picture an emotional weight that firmly renders Logan as the best superhero/western/sci-fi ever.
