2. Sputnik
This Russian Sci-Fi horror is the directorial debut of Egor Abramenko and garnered enough success to attract a large international audience. There are some easy comparisons to be made with Ridley Scott's classic space thriller Alien, but to do so does a disservice to this Sci-Fi horror's brilliant creativity and originality.
The story follows Tatyanna, a young doctor employed to assess a cosmonaut who has returned to Earth with a dangerous extra-terrestrial organism living inside of him. From there a military conspiracy is explored as Tatyanna delves deeper into the reality behind this threat.
It's a fascinating film to watch even for the simple change of perspective. We get most of our exposure to the Cold War from a western lens, so to see an alternative depiction of the period quickly makes the title worth watching.
In addition to this, the film is filled to the brim with tension, as the slow build-up and eventual grand reveal of a more significant piece of the puzzle makes it thoroughly engaging. This is complemented perfectly by clever use of colours, with muted whites and browns being harshly cut with a deep red.
