3. Dredd (2012)

I Am Your Mother
Entertainment Film Distributors

Due its box office failure and positive fan reception, Dredd has revealed itself as an impressive cult favourite since its release, and watching it almost ten years after its debut it's easy to see why.

Karl Urban stars as the eponymous Judge, forced to take on a ruthless drug lord (Lena Heady) in a highly protected high-rise. He's joined by his partner Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), and what follows is exactly what the premise and title suggests. Dredd is uber-violent, claustrophobic and hard-hitting. It's also excellently choreographed and rich in character detail.

Urban makes for a brilliant Judge Dredd, bringing his intimidating frame and intensity to a role that seems made for him, and Thirlby shines as Dredd's able right-hand.

Dredd could easily have been a failure, as the majority of modern sequels and reboots are, but thanks to its assured direction, star-making performances and relentless violence, it sticks the landing at every turn. Now where's the sequel, guys?!
