4. Astro Boy (2009)
Science fiction isn't all about heavy drama and existentialism. If you're after a sci-fi yarn with a bit more accessibility and a family friendly narrative, then Astro Boy is definitely one of the best films on offer.
Based on the manga series of the same name, the film follows the titular Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore), a robot with incredible gifts and human emotions, as he navigates a tricky world-saving adventure and befriends a human (Kristen Bell).
Despite a high calibre voice cast rounded out by Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland and Charlize Theron, Astro Boy was an infamous commercial and critical flop, but time has been kind to it. It's fun, predictable but exciting, and its graphics still shine today. And in a world populated by on-screen superheroes, it's a welcome breath of fresh air.
