10 Best Serial Killers In Movies

2. Norman Bates - Psycho

Psycho certainly had it's critics when it was released back in 1960, with director Alfred Hitchcock having to make multiple cuts to the film (pun not intended) to be able to show it, it also saw an upsurge in audience's love of macabre.

Hitchcock famously operated a "No late admissions" policy for the film, feeling that audiences would feel cheated if they did not see Janet Leigh, which is fair enough, given how brutal and quick her murder is.

Norman Bates played by Anthony Perkins, is the mild-mannered owner of the Bates Motel, who is running the place with his mother.

What follows is a terrifying serial killer, who preys on travellers to his hotel and murders them on the orders of his mother.

In the end, the audience finds out that Bates has been dressing as his mother to carry out the murders, something that caused controversy at the time over the extremely un-PC and offensive phrase "gender-bender" side of the deranged killer, as though this was the side of Norman Bates people had an issue with.

While it turns out that Bates' mother has been dead for several years and her rotting corpse is still kept in the hotel as a conduit for Bates to carry out his evil deeds, Psycho was extremely ahead of it's time, introducing mature subjects and scenes to a post-code Hollywood who was still adapting to what was and what was not allowed.

One of the greatest serial killers ever put to film was born and the scene with Janet Leigh in the shower will stand as one of the most iconic images of all time.
