9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs3981DoINw Number of films: 3, plus a reboot and a prequel to the reboot, and then another reboot. If you are a die hard cult film fan you may be wondering why Chainsaw is not higher up on the list. The original was a low budget gem of cult exploitation filmmaking, securing Tobe Hooper's status as a prolific slasher director. No-one could expect the direction Hooper then took with the first sequel to the film, coming twelve years later and really showing how far he had come as a director since his legendary debut. The third film acted as both the film to hand the reigns down to anyone who would take them, as well as becoming reboot #1. Leatherface, as the film was called, was exactly the kind of dreary, stuck in the middle film to call an end to the series. But years after its unimpressive commercial release, Leatherface found itself confronted by reboot #2. This remake, one of many churned out by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes company, sparked the still ongoing craze of slasher film reboots and for that we can condemn it. But the film itself was still a relatively solid entry. The films that followed it are not worth mentioning, but suffice to say that as a franchise Texas Chainsaw Massacre, whilst slipping in quality as most franchises tend to do, still entertains and shocks to this day. Even if Texas Chainsaw 3D was a complete mess.
