10 Best Slow-Burning Psychological Horror Movies
4. Audition
Master of nightmare fuel Takashi Miike is no stranger to creating horrific cinematic experiences that make viewers wish they could take out their eyeballs and give them a good wash. Out of these frightening flicks, Audition stands as one of his most extreme.
In this gruesome feature, a widower feels as though it's finally time to hop back into the dating game. Rather than go about it like any other normal human would, he chooses to hold a series of auditions for a fake film to find his one and only. Unbeknownst to him, what seems like the perfect woman might just be a nightmare wrapped in a daydream.
Gut-wrenching, vile, brutal - any number of adjectives could be thrown around in an attempt to describe the viciousness of this movie. Yet, each one would fail. Audition has to be seen to be believed. It is only through experiencing it that you could possibly understand just how twisted of a tale it is, and what it sounds like for someone to have their foot cut off with piano wire.
Despite it not being until the third act where things get truly sickening, there are bits and pieces of horror spliced throughout. These moments exist not only for the sake of unnerving you, but as a way of subliminally tuning your brain into its sadistic wavelength. Watch at your own peril.
