10 Best Stephen King Cameos
1. Shopkeeper - It: Chapter 2
It: Chapter 2 is the unfortunately inferior sequel to the fantastic 2017 film, It: Chapter 1. Despite both films having the same crew and most of the same cast, the nearly three-hour long horror epic fell short on scares, was tonally unbalanced, and a drain on the audience's patience.
When the Losers club, now all grown up, return to Derry to defeat the titular shapeshifting entity, they all split up and go find their own answers, for...reasons. During this time, James McAvoy's Bill spots his old bike in a shop window and goes inside, coming across Stephen King.
First off, this is a good scene in general. King's performance, as well as McAvoy's and the set design and direction really drive home what Derry has become under Pennywise's reign. Depressing, sour and just dirty.
Bill in the book felt the most like King himself and, with him being a writer, suffers criticism throughout the film about how his book endings suck. Something that King himself gets told a lot and was certainly a critique of the novel the films are based on.
Having King meet his character at such a pivotal moment actually effects the story. It's the point when Bill grows up, realising his flaws and deciding to face them head on. And we also have King taking a jab at the character too - he won't accept an autograph because he hated the story's ending. It's a surprisingly beautiful flower of a scene, in an otherwise mud-pile of a film.
