10 Best Stephen King Movie Adaptations
9. 1408
Though it's fair to say that the last decade hasn't seen many particularly good Stephen King movies come down the pike, this adaptation of his 1999 short story makes the most of its loopy premise thanks to Mikael Håfström's stylish direction and one of the best performances of John Cusack's career.
Cusack plays an author and paranormal debunker whose worldview is turned upside down when he finds himself trapped inside a haunted hotel room, and though the premise is undeniably familiar to both King fans and the genre as a whole, its sense of humour, impressive approach to surrealism and legitimate creepiness nevertheless keeps it consistently engrossing.
The ending could definitely be better, especially as Håfström shot four of them (hilariously, none of which were King's original one), but the rest of the movie is a terrifically executed psychological thriller.
