10 Best Suburban Horror Movies Of The Last Decade
8. The Babysitter
The fact that The Babysitter received such positive reviews despite operating on such a tired premise highlights the superb quality of the film itself.
Suburban inhabitant and pre-teen Cole is absolutely enamoured with his beautiful new babysitter, Bee, before he realizes that she is a member of a demonic cult after he witnesses her murder a boy in a twisted game of spin the bottle. Bee and her fellow cult members proceed to hunt Cole as they attempt to silence the witness to their crime.
The Babysitter is a rip roaring watch. While the movie frankly induces more laughs than screams of terror, this does not take away from the quality of the film whatsoever. The slapstick, yet gore-soaked manner in which the majority of the cult members are dispatched is absolutely lung-busting at times, such is the sheer level of ridiculousness, invoking memories of similar blood-drenched comedies such as Hot Fuzz.
Samara Weaving is exemplary as the gorgeous leader of the Satanic cult who moonlights as a babysitter, while Judah Lewis brings a brilliant level of adolescent cluelessness to his role as Cole. Ultimately, while The Babysitter won't win any Oscars, let's just appreciate it for what it is. A blood soaked, tongue in cheek, slasher bonanza that takes its limited subject material and smashes it out of the park.
