10 Best Suburban Horror Movies Of The Last Decade

6. Ginger Snaps

The Babysitter Samara Weaving
Motion International

Not only is Ginger Snaps a critically acclaimed cult classic, it is one of the finest examples of suburban horror in existence. Despite low levels of media attention when the movie debuted, it has contemporarily become regarded as one of the finest horror films of all time, let alone within the genre of suburban horror.

The film revolves around two sisters desperate to move out of their dead end suburb, before the titular Ginger is bitten by a werewolf after she begins menstruating. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are absolutely superb as the sisters Ginger and Brigitte, with particular praise singled out for their strong lead performances in the film. The superbly original premise of using werewolves as a metaphor for puberty lends to a darkly humorous yet emotional story and highlights that critically acclaimed horror films need an utterly unique selling point to achieve lasting success.

The film's finale is a genuine tear jerker and throws into sharp relief the immeasurable bond between sisters; it is rare for horror films to evoke such an emotional response given the often ridiculously unbelievable subject matter. Ginger Snaps highlights its pure quality by tugging on the heartstrings of viewers despite the films ludicrous premise and still manages to provide a few memorable scares along the way. What more could a horror fan ask for?
