10 Best Suburban Horror Movies Of The Last Decade

5. Insidious

The Babysitter Samara Weaving
Sony Pictures Releasing

When Insidious was released in 2010, it was lauded as one of the scariest horror movies ever conceived and successfully produced; this writer vividly recalls several audience members running out of the theatre half way through a screening looking white as a sheet. Depicting the tale of a family terrorized by malevolent spectral forces, Insidious is a genuinely terrifying movie experience and highlights that moving to the suburbs within the horror genre is essentially the equivalent of putting a "Demon Wanted" sign on your front lawn.

The red faced demonic entity that features as Insidious' prime antagonist is legitimate nightmare fuel; two yellow eyes shining out of horrendous snarling face make for an absolutely traumatic visage. Production photos of the demon looked almost comical when they were released during the marketing campaign for the movie but this could not be further from the case when he makes his on-screen bow; every scene in which he features is genuinely harrowing and leaves audiences looking over their shoulder long after the film has finished.

While the quality of the film drops off slightly towards the end due to an overly convoluted plot and some questionable writing, Insidious is an absolute must-see for any passionate horror fan and as such features prominently amongst the names of indispensable suburban horrors. The phenomenal success of the first petrifying film launched a multi-movie franchise that now stands as one of the more recognizable horror installments in the world.
